Steel's Masher

A device to hydrate the grist (milled malt) without the need to manually mix the mash.

The process of using a Steel's Masher is called doughing in. When doughing in, the grist is fed into the top of the Steel's Masher and then into a horizontal feed auger at a right hand turn. While the grist is in the feed auger, it is typically mixed with mash water and then passed through a series of paddles or rods to mix the water and the grist thoroughly. The mixture is then fed into the mash tun.
