What is smell training?

Smell training involves repeated exposure to odorants over time, with the intended neuroplastic effect of improving or remediating olfactory functioning.

Simply put, smell training is like exercising: the more you train your sense of smell, the better it will be.

What are the benefits of smell training?

While smell training will help you improve your ability to detect and identify aromas, it also offers other benefits for your health.

Our olfactory nerve and olfactory bulb exhibit neural plasticity, meaning they can alter the brain's neural networks through growth and regeneration. Dynamic neural connections link olfaction and cognition. Smell training has been associated with improvements in global cognition generally and in verbal fluency and learning specifically. Smell training has also been associated with increases in the size of the olfactory bulb and hippocampus.
