Jean De Clerck

Known as one of the brewing world's most influential scientists and scholars, Jean De Clerck founded the European Brewery Convention (EBC) and formulated both Moortgat Duvel and Chimay Blue.

De Clerck was born in Brussels in 1902, attended the brewing school at Belgium's Catholic University of Louvain, and later held his position as professor there for 30 years. He authored Textbook for brewing in 1947, which is still used today.

De Clerck died in 1978 and is buried at the Notre Dame de Scourmont Abbey, which is where Chimay is brewed.
