Cicerone
A person who conducts others through the world of fine beer and has completed the exams and requirements of the Cicerone Certification Program.
There are four levels of Cicerone certification:
- Certified Beer Server - the starting point; individuals must pass a 60-question multiple choice online exam covering keeping and serving beer; beer styles, beer flavors and evaluation; and brewing ingredients. There are currently 60,000+ Certified Beer Servers worldwide.
- Certified Cicerone - individuals must have passed the Certified Beer Server exam and be at least 21-years-old; individuals must pass a 4 hour long exam that covers a wider breadth of the topics covered in the Certified Beer Server exam as well as understand pairing beer with food. There are currently 2000+ Certified Cicerones worldwide.
- Advanced Cicerone - the newest certification level; individuals must have passed the Certified Cicerone exam; individuals must pass a day-long exam by demonstrating expert knowledge of all issues relating to brewing, beer, and beer service. Because the certification testing began in 2016, there are currently 9 Advanced Cicerones worldwide.
- Master Cicerone - the fourth and highest level of Cicerone certification; individuals must have an exceptional understanding of brewing, beer, and pairing. There are currently 11 Master Cicerones worldwide
